The Importance of Your Soil

Soil health has been defined as: “the capacity of soil to function as a living system”.

Healthy soils:

  • control plant disease, insect and weed pests,
  • form beneficial symbiotic associations with plant roots,
  • recycle essential plant nutrients,
  • improve soil structure with positive repercussions for soil water and nutrient holding capacity, and
  • ultimately improve the health of your plants

Maintaining the health of your soil is more than just adding fertilizer each year.  Soil is composed of living organisms that help plants grow, minerals that contribute to plant growth, and organic matter that supports the living organisms and plants.  Be sure to support the total health of your soil by adding organic mulch and fertilizers.

One of the most important ingredients in a soil is mycorrhizal fungi.  These are tiny filaments that attach and penetrate between and within the outer cells of the roots of plants, and become extension of the roots themselves.  This helps the plant by aiding in the absorption of water and nutrients while warding off bad fungi and harmful bacterial.  Most plants are heavily  dependent on these fungi.
